Reviews in a line or two: Mean Girls 2, Clue and the Footloose remake

Mean Girls 2 (2011)
dir. Melanie Mayron
starring Meaghan Martin
This flop of a sequel to the often-quoted 2004 hit has a few amusing moments but is overall poorly acted, predictable and wooden. The score: 0.5/5

Clue (1985)
dir. Jonathan Lynn
starring Eileen Brennan, Madeline Kahn and Tim Curry
A comedic-mystery take on the classic board game, Clue is an absolute riot to watch. Tim Curry can do no wrong and he is phenomenal as usual here, as is the entire cast. The score: 4/5

Footloose (2011)
dir. Craig Brewer
starring Kenny Wormald and Julianne Hough
I went into this film with understandably low expectations since it is a remake of an ’80s Kevin Bacon movie, but I decided to put it on for background noise while working on a paper. (It’s available free to Amazon Prime customers, so why not watch a cheesy remake for free?) Much to my surprise, I didn’t hate it as much as I thought I would – or wanted to. The performances exceeded my expectations and it did a pretty good job of distracting me from my coursework every once in a while. The score: 3/5

  1. I don’t remember you giving a 0.5 score before. Is this a first?

  2. I was going to say the same thing…wait, I am: I don’t think I’ve ever seen you score something 0.5! But now I have your answer to that, so…I stand corrected.

I’ve given far too many one star or less ratings, but that’s only because I enjoy(!) watching so many horrible movies from the ’50s, ’60s, and ’70s.

    • I watch a lot of those too, but they get higher Corny Cliff Scale ratings. I love bad old movies so much that I felt moved to create a whole separate rating system for them! It’s usually modern comedies that get the lowest of low ratings from me.

      • Yeah, I do the same with the bad movie ratings…if it gets a 2 or 2.5, that means I thought it was pretty darn good for a low-brow piece of crud! And I cut a lot less slack for new movies than I do old…in my opinion, new movies should know better!
