The cable-accessing, U.S.-dwelling section of the old movie corner of the internet was full of sad faces at this time last week, as our Most Wonderful Time of the Year — TCM’s August Summer Under the Stars programming — ended. No more movie marathons! No more beautiful Lora Stocker SUTS flash cards on Twitter! How will we cope?!

Well, one way I’ll be coping is by continuing to talk about the films I watched during SUTS. I have drafted reviews for all of the films I watched but haven’t started posting them yet, eager to keep SUTS going for as long as possible. Before I begin with that, I also thought I’d put together an overview of everything I was able to catch during the month, broken down by day/star. My goal was to try to watch at least one film from each star, which I didn’t quite succeed at, but I did do a lot of viewing — most of it new-to-me, but with a few re-watches in the mix. Here’s the list!

  • Edward G. Robinson
    • Five Star Final (1931)
  • Lucille Ball
    • Beauty for the Asking (1939)
  • Bing Crosby
    • Pennies from Heaven (1936)
  • Fay Wray
    • Below the Sea (1933)
    • King Kong (1933) – Rewatch!
  • Karl Malden
    • Take the High Ground! (1953)
  • Montgomery Clift
    • Wild River (1960)
  • Jean Harlow
    • Reckless (1935)
  • Esther Williams
    • On an Island with You (1948)
  • Tim Holt
    • Sadly, I didn’t manage to watch anything for Tim Holt’s day, but I did mark down a few titles to add to my “to watch” list!
  • Hedy Lamarr
    • The Conspirators (1944)
  • Spencer Tracy
    • 20,000 Years in Sing Sing (1932)
  • Janet Gaynor
    • Ladies in Love (1936)
  • Ralph Richardson
    • The Fallen Idol (1948)
  • Cyd Charisse
    • Party Girl (1958)
  • Roddy McDowall
    • How Green Was My Valley (1941) – Rewatch!
  • Anne Baxter
    • Bedevilled (1955)
  • James Edwards
    • Men in War (1957)
  • Angie Dickinson
    • Shoot-Out at Medicine Bend (1957)
  • Ruby Keeler
    • Ready, Willing and Able (1937)
  • Humphrey Bogart
    • I had seen most of the films playing on this day and didn’t manage to catch any on the day itself or on WatchTCM… but I’m sure, eventually, I’ll have watched Bogart’s full filmography, haha. So, no worries for missing a day here!
  • Bette Davis
    • Housewife (1934)
    • The Little Foxes (1941)
  • Robert Montgomery
    • Private Lives (1931)
  • Brigitte Bardot
    • Bardot’s films have always been a big “blindspot” for me and they remain so after this year’s SUTS, haha.
  • Constance Cummings
    • Doomed Cargo (1936)
    • The Mind Reader (1933)
  • Van Johnson
    • Invitation (1952)
  • Boris Karloff
    • The Walking Dead (1936)
  • James Garner
    • I had Mister Buddwing in my watchlist on WatchTCM, but it expired before I got around to it. I’ll catch it on DVD or rent it from Amazon eventually!
  • Jean Arthur
    • You Can’t Take It With You (1938) – Rewatch!
    • The Ex-Mrs. Bradford (1936)
  • Charles Boyer
    • Confidential Agent (1945)
  • Jean Simmons
    • She Couldn’t Say No (1954)
  • Dean Martin
    • 4 for Texas (1963)

I watched 43 films in August, and 31 of ’em came from Summer Under the Stars. A very successful festival, if you ask me!
