In just a few days the Academy Awards will be gracing our living rooms (or maybe our living eyeballs, for those of us lucky enough to perhaps attend the ceremony or red carpet). One way to celebrate the award season, if you’re into movie marathons, is to spend your Saturday watching 24 hours of almost-Oscar winners before the awards air on Sunday!
Maybe 24 hours is a bit extreme. We have lives to live and ZZZ’s to sleep. But if you were to take on this crazy task, here would be my recommendations for about 24 hours worth of films that were nominated for, but did not win Best Picture in the ceremonies of 1930 (honoring films of late 1929/early 1930) through 1950 (honoring films of 1949).

The Love Parade, dir. Ernst Lubitsch

I Am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang, dir. Mervyn LeRoy

Libeled Lady, dir. Jack Conway

98 minutes

The Awful Truth, dir. Leo McCarey
Nominated at the 10th Oscars
90 minutes

The Wizard of Oz, dir. Victor Fleming
Nominated at the 12th Oscars
101 minutes

The Grapes of Wrath, dir. John Ford
Nominated at the 13th Oscars
129 minutes

The Maltese Falcon, dir. John Huston
Nominated at the 14th Oscars
101 minutes

Watch on the Rhine, dir. Herman Shumlin
Nominated at the 16th Oscars
114 minutes

Double Indemnity, dir. Billy Wilder
Nominated at the 17th Oscars
107 minutes

The Yearling, dir. Clarence Brown
Nominated at the 19th Oscars
128 minutes

Johnny Belinda, dir. Jerry Wald
Nominated at the 21st Oscars
102 minutes

24 hours = 1,440 minutes
This marathon = 1,378 minutes
Leaving you… 62 minutes of free time for popcorn-making and other necessary activities!
Cool list, Lindsey! Unfortunately, I’ll be on a photo shoot this Saturday, so I may have time for ONE of these…and since I’ve seen most, the one I’d pick that I haven’t yet seen would be ‘I Am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang’. And my pick for my personal favorite of the entire bunch, you ask? ‘Double Indemnity’.
‘Other necessary activities’, indeed!

You NEED to see I Am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang. Such a fantastic lead performance by Paul Muni. I gave it a “super five” (“5/5!”) when I reviewed it last year.

Ha ha – 62 leftover minutes!
It certainly is an enticing line up… A person would have to plan those 62 minutes very carefully. :)

Though I’m the writer of these marathon lists, I’ve never been brave enough to try one out myself. You have more courage than I for even considering the idea! :P Glad you enjoyed the list!
