My favorite discovery of the month, by a mile, was Broadcast News. This film had been sitting in my Netflix queue for quite a while and I’m disappointed in myself for waiting so long to watch it. It’s fantastic and will be getting a full review some time down the road. Another highlight of the month was my re-watch of Wings for an upcoming blogathon. I fall a little bit more in love with that film every time I re-watch it!

A quick note for August’s blogging!
I may end up taking a little break or missing a few days of blogging in the second half of the month. On August 15 I’m leaving for a rustic camping trip, and while I’ll have access to WiFi when we go into town, I will be without electricity to charge any of my electronic devices. I’ve got car chargers and a WordPress app on my phone, so I may be able to pull it off, but I can’t promise I won’t miss any days! Last year I was able to have a pre-written post up every day during my camping trip, but I was also staying at a modern campground with electrical hookups.
At the very least, I will commit to making that week’s Summer Under the Stars recommendation post (which is already drafted and ready to go). I hope not to miss any days, but I thought I’d give you all some warning just in case. I haven’t missed a day of blogging since 2012, so it would be weird if I disappeared for a few days without a word!
From now until August 15 blogging will continue as normal, and after the trip, TMP will return to its normally-schedule programming on August 25.
Happy Belated Birthday! xx
Wings is such a great film! I can’t totally understand why you love it so much <3

Wings is just fantastic. So much skill, talent and bravery went into shooting it. Glad to hear you enjoy it as much as I do!

I think for the first time ever, you and I saw the same two theatrical releases in the same month: ‘Dawn of the Planet of the Apes’ and ‘Lucy’. What did you think of ‘Lucy’? I saw it on a whim, and it wasn’t quite what I was expecting. (If you’re going to review it, feel free to NOT tell me what you thought!)

It’ll be in Modern Movies, just a short blurb. I couldn’t put my thoughts together well enough for a full review.
I enjoyed it but am still confused by what it was trying to do. It seemed to strive for deep, philosophical messages but there were too many distractions for it to be completely successful in conveying them. With the exception of Leon, which I loved, Luc Besson’s films always leave me entertained but feeling a little puzzled!
Also, I appreciated the opportunity it gave me to school my dad on Australopithecines on our way out of the theater, haha.

Yeah, I was a little perplexed by the whole thing, too…mostly with what style Besson was going for. In the end, I guess it was just HIS style. But like you said, too many distractions, and it got to be a little too outrageous and ‘out there’ to be taken seriously, in my opinion.
And now the question is, did your dad WANT to be schooled on Australopithecines immediately following a Luc Besson film?

I’m not sure he wanted to be schooled on that topic in particular, but he’s always glad to hear me show off the knowledge I earned as an undergrad, haha.
