October is the spookiest month of the year, but it was also the most successful month of the year for me, in terms of viewing. I finally broke my slump, with 32 films watched! On to the wrap-up…

New-to-me viewings: 20

Lots of good stuff this month. I loved several of the films I saw in theaters — First Man, Bad Times at the El Royale, and the new Halloween (which includes so many great references to the original!). I also had the joy of seeing Spirited Away for the first time, and it was on the big screen!

My favorite discoveries of the month were probably The Living Skeleton, The Wicked Lady, Dead End, and Sapphire — all FilmStruck discoveries, which breaks my heart all over again, knowing that I have less than a month left to make FilmStruck discoveries.

Re-watches:

  • The Conjuring (2013)
  • Apollo 13 (1995)
  • Twister (1996)

The month in blogging:

TMP shared some fun reviews in the month of October:

  • ABBA: The Movie (1971) – This odd mockumentary is worth watching for the wonderful musical performances, recorded by Lasse Hallstrom during ABBA’s Australian tour.
  • Frisco Jenny (1932) – This is a heartbreaking drama about a criminal willing to sacrifice everything to save her son, featuring a stellar performance by Ruth Chatterton.
  • Small Town Girl (1953) – Jane Powell stars in this cute but unremarkable musical about a church choir soloist who falls for a big-city bad boy (Farley Granger).
  • Tarantula (1955) – Wrapping up my exploration of the Classic Sci-Fi Ultimate Collection DVD set, I really enjoyed Tarantula. It’s a little silly, a little thinky, and plenty of fun.
  • The Thrill of It All (1963) – Doris Day stars in this Carl Reiner-written spoof of the small screen world, specifically television advertising. Fun to watch, but not my favorite from Day.

I did a massive collection update with most of the books, films, and magazines I acquired from June through October. (The post is missing a few magazines, which I forgot to note down before shelving!)

The main event in October, of course, was the annual Horror Half-Week Halloween celebration! I didn’t go for a theme this year, but covered four films:

That’s it for this month’s wrap-up! I hope you all had a great October, and here’s to an even more wonderful November!
