Welcome to the wrap-up for May! I had a bit of a better viewing month in May in terms of the number of films watched, but beware, you’re in for another new release-heavy wrap-up. My classic viewing this month included just a few rewatches, though I did manage to finally make use of my Criterion Channel subscription! As usual, you’ll find all of the details below.
New-to-me viewings: 10
Re-watches: 8
Total for May: 18
Total for 2019, so far: 76
The new-to-me list:
- The Intruder (2019)
- Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile (2019)
- Someone Great (2019)
- The New Romantic (2018)
- The Hustle (2019)
- The Curse of La Llorona (2019)
- The Sun Is Also a Star (2019)
- Aladdin (2019)
- Straight Outta Compton (2015)
- Always Be My Maybe (2019)
The easy winner for favorite discovery this month is The Sun Is Also a Star. Between this and her previous film, Before I Fall (which is terribly underrated), I’m really excited to see where Ry Russo-Young’s career takes her.
I also enjoyed Someone Great, thought Always Be My Maybe was pretty cute, and liked Aladdin more than most people on the internet seem to have.
The Hustle, on the other hand, was absolute trash and should be avoided at all costs. (Sorry, Anne Hathaway!)
Re-watches:
- Ball of Fire (1941)
- Superstar (1999)
- Purple Rain (1984)
- Hannah Montana: The Movie (2009)

The month in blogging:
Once again, I find myself apologizing for my absence on this blog over the past month, but fear not — I have some plans in the works to get back to posting more regularly! First up is to spend the next couple of evenings/weekends writing up all of the reviews I have notes on. (There are quite a few!)
In the meantime, if you missed it, the big feature in May was the return of the Lindsey and Todd Cheeseathon; check out my review of They Came From Beyond Space and then head over to Cinema Monolith for Todd’s take!
Hey, fellow Cheese-a-thonee! Thanks for the mention! And it’s interesting that your ‘New to Me’ list includes nothing but newer films…did you not watch any ‘new’ old ones? (Besides ‘They Came from Beyond Space’, of course). Of your re-watches, I’d say ‘Mad, Mad World’ is my favorite. I wish I had untold riches, so I could buy the Criterion Blu-ray, but I guess my semi-cool DVD will have to do!
Looking forward to the big plans, and seeing more reviews!

I didn’t! Since I don’t review (or, most of the time, particularly care about) newer films I’ve sort of fallen into the habit of watching them at night to shut my brain off after work… which is terrible, and something I hope to do less of in June.
Mad, Mad World is a gem. Easily one of my top five all-time comedies. It was actually one of the first classic films I ever watched — a favorite of my grandma. I don’t have the Criterion either, though I’ve been tempted to upgrade to it on several occasions!

If you do get the Criterion Blu-ray of ‘Mad’, let me know if you like it…I may end up having to upgrade, too. Yes, I have promised myself ‘no more Blu-rays’, but I think I’m allowed to replace existing DVDs with them, right? I don’t think that can considered breaking the rules! ;-)
