Straight Talk (1992)
dir. Barnet Kellman; starring Dolly Parton
I absolutely love Dolly Parton and the lead character of Shirlee in this film is perfect for her: sassy, likable and full of good ol’ Southern wisdom. The film is very funny, and the all-Dolly soundtrack is a treat for anyone who is a fan of her voice.
NOTABLE QUOTES:
“You are a doctor… of the heart. You’re a doctor of the heart.”
“Do you give credit to people who steal other people’s bowling bags?”
“It’s 12 o’clock and if you’re not honkin’ your horn for Shirlee, you should be!”
THE SCORE: 4/5

Overnight Delivery (1998)
dir. Jason Bloom; starring Reese Witherspoon, Paul Rudd and Christine Taylor
Overnight Delivery is a somewhat raunchy but quite funny film with great banter between the characters. The mishaps that occur for the leads are pretty implausible and silly, but the film is fun to watch.
NOTABLE QUOTES:
“It’s just your picture. Naked. And she’s just learning to post things on the internet.”
“Trips, it’s way too cold for killer bees. They need warm climates to survive.”
“I’d opt for sea foam!”
THE SCORE: 3.5/5

THE PROMISE (1979)
dir. Gilbert Cates; starring Kathleen Quinlan, Stephen Collins and Beatrice Straight
The Promise has a premise with the potential for great emotion, and it does reach that potential in the middle, but it is unfortunately bookended by a whoooole lot of cheese. The result is a film that is overall a bit flat, with characters that the audience never really grows to care about as a couple, though a good amount of sympathy is built for Quinlan’s character.
NOTABLE QUOTES:
“Can you stay my friend and be my husband at the same time?”
“You’ve already lost everything you’re going to lose, including Michael!”
“As your psychotherapist, I think they’re magnificent.”
The score: 2.5/5
Dolly Parton is just fabulous in any role, she’s apologetically herself.
