Since June was a very small month for the growth of my collection (one DVD set and one book), I decided to combine the June and July updates into one post. Let’s take a look at what’s been added to the TMP library!
DVD/Blu:
- TCM Greatest Classic Legends: Doris Day (DVD set)
Includes Calamity Jane, Please Don’t Eat the Daisies, Love Me or Leave Me and Romance on the High Seas. Special features: Five shorts, plus newsreels from the premiere of Calamity Jane and awards ceremonies - TCM Greatest Classic Legends: Robert Mitchum (DVD set)
Includes Angel Face, Out of the Past, The Sundowners and Home from the Hill. Special features: Commentary on Out of the Past and Angel Face; Theatrical trailer for Home from the Hill; On Location with The Sundowners featurette and theatrical trailer - TCM Showcase: Claudette Colbert (DVD set)
Includes Imitation of Life, Cleopatra, The Palm Beach Story and Midnight. I picked this up during TCM’s overstock sale for only $3.99! ($4.99 in the sale plus an additional 4th of July discount.) I’m so excited to finally own Midnight! - Nights in Rodanthe
This was a gag birthday gift from my mom, who knew that it was one of two Nicholas Sparks movies I didn’t own, and knew that it was my least favorite, haha. (Hi, mom! Thanks, mom!) - The Treasure of the Sierra Madre
Two-disc special edition. Includes commentary, a Leonard Maltin introduction, Key Largo theatrical trailer, a newsreel, several cartoon and musical shorts, a Lux Radio Theater broadcast, and a documentary about the making of the film. - Warner Bros. Triple Feature: John Wayne
“John Wayne takes aim at stardom!” Includes Ride Him, Cowboy, The Big Stampede and Haunted Gold. - Warner Bros. Triple Feature: War Films
Includes Never So Few, Go For Broke! and Objective Burma! Special features: Theatrical trailers, Raoul Walsh profile and vintage shorts - Downton Abbey, Season 5 (DVD)
Includes about 40 minutes worth of bonus behind-the-scenes features. This was my only entertainment-related purchase in June! No other books, no other DVDs/Blus. Now that’s what I call will power!
Entertainment-related books/ephemera:
- LIFE magazine, July 2, 1956 issue (Birthday gift from my mom!)
- LIFE magazine, July 9, 1956 issue (Birthday gift from my mom!)
- Look magazine, September 8, 1970 issue
Greta Garbo cover – “Garbo is 65: A surprising portrait of the most mysterious woman of our time” (Yet another birthday gift from mom!) - The Monkees Go Mod
And ANOTHER gift from mom, haha! She bought this wacky little book for me during a visit to our favorite antique shop in June. As the title would suggest, it’s “A trip into the mod, mod world of Micky, Mike, Davy and Peter.” - Child Star: An Autobiography by Shirley Temple Black
This book is in pretty beat-up shape but I couldn’t pass it up at the library book sale for a quarter. - Get Happy: The Life of Judy Garland by Gerald Clarke
Found a nice hardcover copy at the library book sale. - J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth books (The Silmarillon, The Hobbit, and The Lord of the Rings)
I adore the Lord of the Rings films and attempted to read the book once, when the films were still being released in theaters. I didn’t succeed, because I was in middle school and entering a phase of little patience for large books. My sister and I have recently re-discovered our love for the films, so we’re going to buddy-read all of the Middle-earth books! These editions have gorgeous covers (see below).
