In last month’s collection update, I came to the realization that I hadn’t bought a single film on DVD or Blu since April! August broke that trend, and today we have an all-movie update, with no classic film books or vintage mags purchased last month.
Early in the month I placed an order of five Barbara Stanwyck films to continue the recent jolt of progress I’ve had working on her filmography. After reviewing these five films, I would have been just twelve away from completing the project!
But now I’m stuck at 17-to-go on the Stany project, because for some reason Amazon was being extremely slow to process my order. Two weeks passed with no word on whether the items were even preparing to ship, and while shipping was supposed to take just 5-7 days, the expected delivery date said October 1! Almost two whole months away from my August 5 order! Not sure why this happened, but I decided to cancel the order and try ordering a couple of the discs separately. These two discs did arrive promptly, the first two items for this month’s update:
- Ball of Fire (1941) – DVD
I have seen this film before but have never made a blog post about it. Will probably use the “Favorite Things” format, but I’ll definitely do some type of post on it for the Stanwyck project! - Blowing Wild (1953) – DVD
Another Cooper/Stanwyck co-starring picture. I may have to watch them as a double feature!
I also picked up a few things outside of Amazon this month:
- Godspell (1973) – DVD
I had seen several clips from this movie before purchasing, and it looked positively wacky. Victor Garber portraying Jesus Christ while wearing clown makeup? A crowd of hippies strolling through New York City with a hot dog cart in tow? I knew I had to see the entire thing, especially when I found a copy for the low-low price of $1.99. I watched it as soon as it arrived, and you can expect a special blog post about it once I’m finished posting my backlog of Summer Under the Stars reviews! - Pretty Little Liars, Season 5 – DVD
Just continuing my DVD collection for this show. I like to get a steal on TV seasons if I can, rather than buying full price, and this one finally dropped to an amount I was willing to pay, haha. This show poses more questions than it answers, so it’s always fun to re-watch; by the time I do so, I’ve forgotten everything that happened, because so many new questions have popped up!
I was also gifted two Blus by my sister:
- The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, Part 1 (2011) – Blu-ray
- The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, Part 2 (2012) – Blu-ray
Laugh at us all you want, but we love to watch these awful movies during our “Sister Movie Time” marathon nights. We watched three of the five films in August, including these two. Immeasurable laughs were had.
And that’s the full collection update for August! Six new additions — not too shabby. Here’s hoping I’ll be able to get my hands on those missing Stanwyck titles in September!
