It’s a well known fact ’round here that Cary Grant is one of my favorite actors. For this week’s Collector’s Corner, I’ll be taking a look at all of the Cary-related things I’ve collected over the years, and sharing my most-wanted list of Cary films to add to my shelf!
I own just one Cary Grant magazine cover: the July 26, 1966 issue of LOOK, which features “Cary Grant and His Baby.” Several of my other mags contain ads, reviews, and articles about Cary. On the bookshelves, you may be surprised to know I own just three titles: Donald Deschner’s The Complete Films of Cary Grant, Jennifer Grant’s Good Stuff, and Richard Schickel’s Cary Grant: A Celebration. Because I became a fan of the man so early in my years of classic film discovery, before I had much spending money of my own, most of the reading I’ve done about Cary has been from the library. There are several heftier Grant books yet to be added to my shelves.
I tend to target most of my collecting efforts toward books and DVDs, but having seen several Cary Grant films on the big screen at the Redford, I couldn’t resist picking up one more collectible: a t-shirt! My shirt is from the screening I attended of Notorious and features a poster for the film, with Cary and Ingrid’s beautiful faces featured prominently.
Most-Wanted: Cary films on my DVD wishlist!
Of course, I’d like to own every Cary film eventually. There are a few I’m particularly eager to pick up.
She Done Him Wrong (1933), The Talk of the Town (1942), The Bachelor and the Bobby-Soxer (1947), Every Girl Should Be Married (1948) and I Was a Male War Bride (1949) are all Cary films I’ve seen, have loved, and would love to own.
This Is the Night (1932) was Cary’s first film. I haven’t seen it, and since I own his final film (Walk, Don’t Run), it would be nice to bookend the collection.
Topper (1937), one of my favorite Cary films, is highest on the list. I adore it and have kept a copy saved on my DVR for several years. I want it on the shelf!
